A Brief Chronology
Late 1940's - SDSU adopts an Aztec Warrior
as its symbol and mascot. Over the years, the mascot earns the
affectionate name "Monty Montezuma"
May 15, 2001 - SDSU President Stephen Weber
sets aside the results of a campus referendum where 95% of the
students and boosters state their desire to retain Monty Montezuma.
SDSU becomes the only division one program without an official
mascot.
Spring 2002 - Aztec Warrior Foundation formed
by an independent group of SDSU Alumni, boosters, and fans to
bring back a Warrior mascot.
Summer 2002 - The SDSU mascot search committee,
in a split decision, recommends a warrior figure as school mascot.
Dr Weber reviews the decision and states, " a mascot is intended
to be an appropriate unifying, spirit-raising symbol of the university".
To date we have " been unable to develop a mascot that meets
these criteria"
July 31, 2002 - Pope John Paul II performs a
canonization mass for Aztec Juan Diego in Mexico City, thus creating
the first Native American to be a Saint of the Catholic Church.
Aztec Warriors honor the Pope with performances in authentic warrior
apparel. The Aztec Warrior Foundation uses research from these
proceedings to support the authenticity of the design for the
new SDSU Aztec Warrior uniform.
September 14, 2002 - The first appearance by
the new Aztec Warrior at the SDSU vs. Arizona State football game.
November
12, 2003 - President Weber announces Mascot
referendum allowing students, AAF and Alumni to Vote to make the
Aztec Warrior the official mascot of San Diego State.
December 11, 2003 - Aztec Warrior
Mascot once again official by overwhelming vote
